DuckTales

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and the primary reason for this is that my grandmother, the last grandparent I have, passed away last month; and well, I took a break from writing and wasn’t quite sure how to start it back.  Then, I finally decided to end my well-over-a-month hiatus with a review of DuckTales!  (FYI:  This review is for the remake, not the original.)  After it was announced that Disney was going to remake DuckTales for the channel Disney XD, some people were unsure about how the show was going to turn out being a remake and all; but, when DuckTales was released in 2017, it was well-received by both critics and audiences who praised the animation, characters, and nostalgia of the show.  A comic book series and several online episodes soon followed.  While I could never quite get into the original DuckTales, I was inspired to watch this remake after I learned that Danny Pudi, who stars in the T.V. show Community (one of my favorite shows these days) was in it.  I just had to check it out, and I hope that you will check it out as well!  The vintage comic book displayed in my pic with this post is a gift from my grandmother I mentioned above, so l’d like to dedicate this blog post to her, “Nanny,” whom I miss a lot!

DuckTales is about three mischievous duck brother triplets:  Huey, Dewey, and Louie.  These brothers live with their uncle, Donald Duck.  One day, Donald has had enough of their shenanigans and decides to ask his uncle, Scrooge, whom he hasn’t spoken to in over a decade, to babysit his nephews for him.  Despite Scrooge’s grumpiness, he has a soft spot for the three young ducks and lets them (and Donald too) move into his house; and along with Scrooge’s housekeeper’s granddaughter, Webby, and his chauffer, Launchpad McQuack, the ducks end up going on grand adventures during which they meet new friends and enemies.  Despite not ever loving the original DuckTales, I really enjoy this remake of the show.  It’s made how a remake should be made:   it has wonderful animation, great characters, and many funny moments.  You may recognize a few familiar voices in it too, as some famous T.V. stars make up the cast.  While I do really like the show, parts of it are kind of creepy, as some of the villains are quite dark (which you’ll be prepared for if you watched the original).  Also, I personally am not a fan of the character Mark Beaks.  (I’m not sure why but something about him gets on my nerves.)  So, I would caution parents regarding the creepy villains and would recommend the show for older kids only.  What I like most about this show is how deep it can go sometimes.  At the beginning of the show, we see that Donald Duck and Scrooge had some sort of fallout that made them estranged for many years; and we get a lot of interesting subplots too, like what happened to the triplets’ mother and like an evil duck who’s being forced to be evil.  The main theme overall, though, is who/what family really is.  While the triplets have a very small family, they also find family in their friends, Webby and Launchpad.  And that just goes to show that family isn’t always blood; it’s the people who love and accept who you are.  That is family!  And that is a recurring theme that I just keep seeing lately in the media!  And it resonates with me a whole lot!

I’m so very glad you’re back, Evangeline! I’ve really missed hearing your thoughts! And I’m really sorry about your grandmother. The comic book you display above is so cool, and I feel sure it’d make your grandma really happy to know that you displayed it on your blog. You’ve made me interested in seeing Ducktales (the remake that is) and the show Community too (Can you believe this TV buff has never seen that!?!). And I love the lessons about “real” family that you teased out of the remake. Family seems to be a recurring theme in shows and books and media in general, doesn’t it? Thanks for coming back to us! And I can’t wait to see what you share with us all next week!

I’m glad to be back too! It’s been way too long. You definitely need to check out both shows! I would love to hear what you think when you watch both of them! Thank you for reading!

The title sounded familiar and after reading your review I’ve had recollections of catching snippets of it as I worked around the house. My boys watched it. It must have been a while ago and before we moved to Japan. It looked cute. I remember wondering why Scrooge and Donald Duck were in the same show. Based on your review I gather it’s too violent/ dark for Liam? We’ve been watching Mickey’s clubhouse.

I’m so glad you’re back! And what a beautiful dedication to your Nanny.

Oh that’s cool that your boys have seen it! Yeah I don’t think Liam should watch it right now but I think it would be fine for Liam to check out when he’s a little bit older. And Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is so cute! Haven’t seen that one in a while. You’ve inspired me to watch the Halloween episode to get me in the Halloween spirit! Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts!
